The Wintu Mural sprawls across the side of the Cascade Theatre at 1731 Market St. is titled “Wayken-pana El Pom and is the June 2022 creation of Michele Radcliff-Garcia, Carl Avery and Vanessa Scholfield. The mural features a hummingbird, known for its healing abilities. The hummingbird hovers in front a 4-year-old Wintu girl wearing a ceremonial headpiece. ‘Wayken-pana El Pom’ translate to ‘everyone is welcome in Redding,’ and depicts two Earths, one with red flames and the other with wavy blue lines and represent Wintu people’s creation story, in which an animal relative first brought fire, spreading flames far across the world, and then another brought water, leading to great floods.
